Overview tests

One of the best predictors of job performance

The scientific literature agrees: reasoning tests are a very good predictor of how a person performs in the workplace. The tests highlight one or more aspects of reasoning ability, such as abstract reasoning, logical reasoning, interpreting tables/graphs and verbal reasoning. For all these types of reasoning, rather than using learned knowledge, we mainly appeal to our problem-solving thinking skills.

The different reasoning tests highlight a person’s performance in a different way each time. Depending on the position, you can then opt for a general or more specific reasoning test.

The test ALGO evaluates deductive reasoning ability and examines whether a person finds the right computational method to solve a problem. This is needed when analysing numerical questions in which it is important to find the right algorithm. Therefore, the focus of the test is not so much on the concrete performance of certain mathematical operations.

The questions contain linguistically formulated mathematical questions and examine whether a person finds the correct mathematical method for solving a problem.

ALGO is designed for candidates with an undergraduate or graduate degree who need to be able to interpret a lot of numerical information, such as marketing managers, accountants and financial analysts.

The CONCLUS test measures deductive reasoning ability and evaluates whether a person can quickly draw the right conclusions from available data.

Each question contains a series of statements that require candidates to make the right connections and draw a conclusion.

The test is intended for candidates aspiring to a position in, for example, the insurance, IT, banking and accountancy sectors.
The CTT evaluates how well a person can interpret texts and think critically about them.

The questions consist of short texts asking questions such as these: are there sufficient arguments to draw a particular conclusion? What conclusion follows logically from a particular argument? What questions should you ask in order to draw the right conclusion?

This test is useful for jobs that require the ability to think critically about information and data, e.g. for researchers, engineers, marketing or communication specialists, policy staff and teaching staff.

To know if someone is a good communicator, you can measure verbal reasoning ability.

ANABO evaluates verbal reasoning through combinations of words where you have to find the connection and apply it to a new word combination. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

Functions where good communication is crucial include those of receptionists, lawyers, HR functions, social worker, teaching and coordinating functions.

ALGO L1A measures candidates’ numeracy skills, as part of numerical reasoning ability.

The test consists of verbally formulated mathematical questions. A wide range of mathematical operations are covered, such as calculating averages, converting percentages and converting areas on map to areas on terrain.

ALGO L1A can be used for candidates with a high school diploma (lower or higher), for jobs such as technical workers, construction workers, file managers, payroll clerks or commercial workers.

The CALCUL test measures candidates’ numeracy skills, as part of numerical reasoning ability.

The questions consist of arithmetic tasks involving numerical data (not formulated verbally). There are several test versions that differ in terms of the difficulty of the mathematical operations to be performed.

CALCUL can be used for jobs in which head calculation skills are important, such as accountants, financial analysts and a range of sales positions (cashiers, shop assistants, waiters).

The TABLE test evaluates analytical reasoning ability as part of numerical reasoning ability, with a focus on table interpretation.

Each question contains a table of numbers, quantities and/or percentages where a question must be answered via multiple-choice options. Candidates must be able to parse the tables and find the correct relationship between the data. A calculator is integrated into the test. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

This test is used for jobs that often require working with data in the form of tables, such as administrative jobs in accounting and scientific jobs.

The ITG test evaluates analytical reasoning ability as part of numerical reasoning ability, with a focus on graph interpretation.

Each question contains a graph where a question must be answered via multiple-choice options. A calculator is integrated into the test.

This test is ideally suited for jobs that often require working with data in the form of graphs, such as marketing functions, financial analysts, journalists. The test can be used on candidates with at least an upper secondary school diploma.

NUM measures numerical reasoning ability, which is important when you need to quickly see connections between numerical data and interpret numerical data on a regular basis.

NUM evaluates numerical reasoning via number sequences that need to be completed based on logical patterns. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

This test is ideally suited to numerical positions such as those of accountants, engineers, payroll clerks and positions in the financial sector.

INTEL measures abstract reasoning ability. Those with strong abstract reasoning abilities are often good at problem-solving and making connections when analysing situations or processes.

INTEL evaluates abstract reasoning ability via figure sequences to be completed based on logical patterns. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

The INTEL is suitable for jobs where good analytical thinking skills are important and is used for a wide range of jobs, from foreman to clerical or managerial positions. Only the instructions are formulated in linguistic terms; the questions themselves do not gauge language knowledge.

ABALET measures abstract reasoning ability. Those with strong abstract reasoning abilities are often good at problem-solving and making connections when analysing situations or processes.

ABALET evaluates abstract reasoning ability via letter sequences to be completed based on logical patterns. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

The test is suitable for jobs in which good analytical thinking skills are important, especially in contexts where written text is more involved than, for example, numerical data, such as for lawyers, HR staff, R&D positions and IT positions.

ARBED, LINT and KIT are general reasoning tests for executive functions. These tests measure general reasoning ability through sub-aspects such as numeracy, language skills, spatial awareness and attentiveness and abstract reasoning.

ARBED and LINT include language questions, mathematical questions, questions in which figures have to be mentally rotated (spatial awareness), questions in which the figure that does not fit in the sequence has to be indicated (salience) or in which a figure sequence has to be completed (abstract reasoning).

In KIT, the focus is not on finding out the meaning of words or performing arithmetic operations (such as addition, multiplication). The questions in KIT include figures, numbers and words, and candidates have to find an identical figure in a sequence, indicate which group the figure belongs to (classify), complete figure sequences or reason based on analogies.

KIT can be used for executive functions from primary education up to upper secondary level, LINT and ARBED can be used from lower secondary level up to undergraduate level.

The General Intelligence Factor Test evaluates four aspects of reasoning ability: figural-abstract reasoning, symbolic-abstract reasoning, verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. In the test version GIFT NV OL, verbal reasoning is omitted.

The test covers four types of questions: completing letter sequences, number sequences and figure sequences, and solving verbal analogies. The difficulty of the questions adapts to the candidates’ individual level during test-taking.

The GIFT is the most complete reasoning test in our range. The report makes a statement about the candidates’ general reasoning ability based on the performance on the four test sections. You also get a reliable score for each of the four aspects of reasoning ability.
